North Yell is a fun and vibrant community and through the NYDC’s project Get North Yell Going Again we arrange a wide variety of events for all ages. All our events are free to attend and encourage intergenerational social engagement.

Keep Yell Warm

The Cullivoe Hall and North Yell Development Council began Keep Yell Warm in the winter of 2022 with the goal of providing help to combat the cost of living crisis and opportunities for the community to come together during the winter.

Every Tuesday during term time the Cullivoe Public Hall is open to the public with access to free wifi, beds, showers, information from local services, activities, food and clothing bank and hot drinks. Each week we offer a free two course lunch to all attendees which is very popular. We are also able, thanks to volunteers in the community, to offer takeaways to those unable to get out and about.

Keep Yell Warm is a great opportunity for intergenerational socialisation and we are regularly visited by the Cullivoe Primary School.

  • “It’s an incredible atmosphere in here today”

  • “Yell has such a wonderful community”

  • “It has been so nice to see such a lot of people come out.”

  • “What a brilliant and very much appreciated effort”

  • “Well done to all involved- it was great, and made such a difference to how we felt on such a cold, dark day! Feel lucky to live in such a lovely community.”

    Wicked Wednesday

    Bairns making pizzas
Wicked Wednesday is a weekly youth club running during the winter months to provide all primary and secondary aged children a place to meet and socialise. Any school age bairn can attend, not just limited to North yell so it is a great way to foster connections between other areas of the island.

Each week a variety of activities are on offer from baking to board games, crafting to quizzes. Towards the end of the school year, we host the Wicked Wednesday School Sleepover, one big sleepover at the Cullivoe School.

    Classes and workshops

The NYDC put on a variety of classes and workshops throughout the year, all the classes are free to attend. Classes include portrait drawing, sewing, cooking, keep fit.
